SPEEDHUNTERS.COM DRIVER BLOG: RYAN GATES>> COMPLETE REBUILD OF GATES311.COM EVO X

Hey hey my fellow SpeedHunters, my name is Ryan Gates and I’m here to share some pretty rad info with you all! First of all, I’d like to thank the awesome crew at SpeedHunters for letting me post the whole rebuild and refresh process of my Modified class Evo X. It’s taken a beating over the last two race season… it’s been a track rat pretty much since the day I bought the car in early ’08. Running across the US competing in both US-based Time Attack series Redline Time Attack, and Super Lap Battle.

Each event was used as development for new parts, tuning, testing different setups etc… the entire time running the all-new and unproven OEM 4B11T engine from Mitsubishi. Needless to say the car was due for a refresh after a hard 10,000+ track miles over the past two seasons. When the stock engine finally let go during practice in the first event of 2010, that refresh process began ASAP and was handled by none other than my boys at AMS Performance.

AMS NOS Energy Drink Time Attack EVO X Wins Redline Time Attack Nashville
and Breaks the Track Record!

6/26/09
Nashville, TN

In its first outing the AMS/NOS Energy Drink EVO X was able to secure a second place finish operating on low boost. With more testing under their belt and more power on tap, the team looked to make an even stronger showing at the Redline Time Attack at the Nashville Super Speedway.

Competing in the Unlimited AWD class in itself proves to be a challenge. When competing with world-class teams like Sierra Sierra Enterprises, it becomes even more difficult. This would be the first time the two teams had met. Many have suspected these two cars would be the two to watch this season. Both teams have a great deal of experience in racing and both were campaigning very well-built EVO’s so it was sure to be a dog fight.

Saturday’s practice went as expected with both teams gradually getting quicker and quicker as the day went on. The conditions were hot but the skies were clear for the day’s events. Back and forth, AMS and Sierra Sierra traded the fastest laps; each team within mere tenths of a second of each other. At the end of the day, it was the AMS/NOS Energy Drink EVO X piloted by Mark Daddio that had the fastest lap in class and for the day with a 1:02.7 besting the Sierra Sierra car by only two tenths of a second. The stage was set for Sunday.

Sunday morning rolled in and the weather wasn’t as kind. Rain had pounded the track overnight and into the morning. Teams were putting on their rain tires and getting ready for unfavorable conditions. Luckily the rain passed over, but even with the track still damp, AMS laid down an even faster time. Sierra Sierra was up to the task too as they also bested Saturday’s times. By the end of the practice sessions, the AMS/NOS Energy Drink EVO X had claimed the number one qualifier spot with a 1:00.994 lap – the only team of the day to break into the one minute category. Sierra was not far behind posting a 1.01.3 second lap so both teams entered into competition with just over three tenths of a second separating them!

It was do or die time! With the heat and sun rolling in, the track conditions were only going to get worse throughout the day. All competitors knew the first session would be the one to post the fastest lap. The AMS/NOS Energy Drink EVO X took the number one position in grid. In the first round, AMS charged around the bank clearly on a mission to lay down a fast lap. As it rounded the final bend, Mark Daddio sailed across the finish with a time of 1:01.296 – breaking the track record for a lap in competition at the Nashville Super Speedway by nearly 2.5 seconds! Unfortunately Sierra Sierra suffered some rear end issues and were not able to compete. The AMS/NOS Energy Drink EVO X was able to take home the first place finish in the Unlimited AWD class – winning the Unlimited Class overall and taking the overall win for Round 4 of the Redline Time Attack series!

With the overall win and with AMS sponsored driver Ryan Gates taking home a commanding 1st place finish in the Modified Class, AMS was able to win every class they entered!

The AMS/NOS Energy Drink Time Attack EVO’s next stop is Round 5 of the Redline Time Attack series at Carolina Motorsports Park on August 8th and 9th. Be sure to check out AMS as they try for back to back wins and bring even MORE power to the table for Round 5!

AMS Performance / NOS Energy Drink TA-X debuts with a podium finish!

AMS Performance / NOS Energy Drink TA-X debuts with a podium finish!

This past weekend marked the first ever Redline Time Attack at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL. It was also to be the debut for the AMS Performance / NOS Energy Drink Time Attack Mitsubishi EVO X (TA-X). Just days prior TA-X was in pieces and in its final stage of assembly. The team was able to come together and get the car up and running for the weekend’s events.

Saturday’s testing went very well with the AMS /NOS EVO X getting quicker and quicker. Some new car bugs prevented the AMS team from running the car at peak power. The team was only able to compete at the 450 wheel horsepower level, down from the 600whp level they had hoped to compete at. Each session brought about a new series of changes and tweaks to help improve the car. AMS driver Mark Daddio worked his magic with the underpowered car as each practice session the AMS/NOS Energy drink car got quicker and quicker.

This event brought out some stiff competition but early on Saturday it became clear that the Crawford Performance STI driven by Tarzan Yamada was the car to beat. With 580 wheel horsepower and in its second year of competition was running very quick laps all day. TA-X and the Crawford STI exchanged fastest lap times Saturday leaving Sunday open to either team.

Sunday started out with the TA-X setting the fastest lap of the event thus far in their first practice session. Rain was imminent as the radar showed a storm cell moving towards the track. As the first competition session kicked off once again it was AMS and Crawford within a couple of tenths of a second with the Crawford car edging them out. It would come down to the last session…so long as the weather would hold out AMS had a chance to take TA-X out for one last chance.

Down on power AMS brought TA-X out for its last session of the day with only minutes before the approaching storm rolled in. In exciting fashion both AMS and Crawford once again reset each other’s best lap time with Crawford edging TA-X out on its first lap. It all came down to the last lap. With a blistering first section as Mark Daddio rolling into turn four tragedy struck as the shifter cable on TA-X snapped…ending their session and the day.

In only its first competition the AMS/ NOS Energy Drink Time Attack EVO X was able to take a podium finish. TA-X claimed second place in the unlimited AWD class and second fastest overall lap of the day. What is even more impressive is that it was achieved without the additional 150 wheel horsepower the car will have later on in the season.
After TA-X’s appearance at the Mitsubishi Owner’s Day in Cypress, Ca July 11th, the next race will be July 25/26 at the Redline Time Attack in Nashville, TN. With what was learned over this past weekend AMS hopes to improve TA-X by restoring its horsepower level back to 600, adding more aero and more importantly even more testing time. The AMS / NOS Energy Drink Time Attack car should be back stronger than ever.

AMS would like to take time out to thank our generous sponsors whom without their support TA-X would not be possible:
