Well unfortunately we were unable to hit our goal of attending the Fall Texas Mile with the Hearse due to other shop priorities, but we are happy to be working on the project again. We are still pleased to have Shane Smith on the project finalizing the fabrication side of things and he has been turning out some trick stuff.

The cooling system was an area to address once the turbo system was complete. We want to be sure we keep things cool on those hot/humid Chicago days running the A/C or flying down the Texas Mile in the heat. We decided to custom fabricate a huge dual pass radiator which measures 3.5x18x34 with an integrated coolant overflow tank. The radiator was also recessed into core support for additional space allowing us room to run a Taurus fan which is often used in conversion which flows a whopping 4500 cfm. The water pump was also modified and custom upper and lower radiator hoses fabbed to work around the turbo system components.

We have our head GM tech, Lance Cain, working on the other details of the build.. fuel system, brake lines, wiring, etc. Lance has been working with our friend Randy @ Yates EFI on a very custom engine harness for the build. This is going to really clean up things under hood compared to our original plans on a modified harness. We are also adding a few gauges to keep tabs on engine vitals.

During testing on our ALPHA 12 car on low boost we saw GREAT improvements in HP and torque across the entire power band. For those looking for a bump in power on any level of GT-R our throttle body porting service is the way to go! We have ported cores on the shelf ready to go for exchange!!!

The AMS Nissan R35 GT-R CNC Ported Throttle Body Service offers solid performance gains and improved throttle response coupled with OEM drivability. Using precision CNC machining, we increase the stock throttle body diameter from 60mm to 63mm providing a 10% increase in airflow area resulting in more horsepower. Your throttle blade shafts are then EDM thinned (Electrical Discharge Machining) to remove excess material. The result is even better flow and less turbulence to provide maximum airflow under wide open throttle. You can expect up to 40HP gains depending on engine configuration from this simple yet very effective service.

Features

10% increase in flow area over stock throttle body

EDM thinned throttle body shaft for better flow and less turbulence

Improved throttle response

“I just want to thank AMS for all the support that helped us win our second straight SCCA T2 National Championship!!. The car ran perfectly all week and allowed our heavily restricted Evo to battle toe to toe with the 2011 5 liter Ford sponsored Mustang GT driven by Grand am cup Pro Andrew Aquilante and the Nissan sponsored 370Z driven by World Challenge Pro Tony Rivera as well as many others. With a slightly damp track and clouds looming, we chose to go out on rain tires where most of the front runners went out on dries. Once the track dried up we slipped back a few places until the rain finally hit as we had planned. The advantage swung back in our favor and we were able to get back to the lead and the win.”

Marty Grand

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Sept. 25, 2011) – Marty Grand, of Manassas Park, Va., captured his second-consecutive Touring Two title in a downpour at the 48th SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America. Chad Gilsinger, of Marysville, Ohio, and Brian Kleeman, of Baltimore, Md., completed the podium after many of the competitors crashed on the final lap.
The course was damp but drying at the start of the Black Magic Touring 2 race scheduled for 13 laps around the four-mile circuit. Gumout polesitter Andrew Aquilante battled intensely with Grand in his No. 32 Phoenix/Hoosier/Hawk Ford Mustang GT in the opening laps. Grand’s No. 43 AMS Performance/TRE/Hoosier/Carbotech Mitsubishi Evo IX had the advantage of all-wheel drive, while Aquilante’s Mustang had the power down the straights.

On lap six, Aquilante had pulled out a gap, and Grand fell into the grips of second-starting Tony Rivera’s No. 11 Brass Monkey Racing/Nissan/Hoosier Nissan 370Z NISMO and Jay Patel’s fourth-starting No. 12 Fall-Line/Porsche Exchange/Weathertech Porsche 996. Grand started the race on wet tires, while the others at the front of the grid were on dries.

By lap seven, rain began to fall. Mark Boden, who changed cars and started 25th in the No. 78 Fall-Line Motorsports Porsche 996 worked his way through the slippery conditions up to third, behind Aquilante and Rivera. The rain helped Grand’s resurgence, and as it began to pour and puddle, he and Boden worked past Rivera. On lap 10, Boden slid off course multiple times, and Aquilante, ahead by 12 seconds at one point, spun in turn 12 and brushed the wall.

Aquilante pitted with damage, promoting Grand to the lead and Rivera to second. Rivera skidded off, through the turn three gravel and into the tires, and was later joined by the cars of Jason Ott, Kris Von Sydow and David Muramoto. The mess brought out a full course caution and race control elected to checker the race three laps early due to the treacherous conditions.

Under caution, Grand won with a margin of victory of 1:35.754 over Gilsinger, averaging 79.614 mph.

“We watched radar so much that my buddy’s probably sick of hearing ‘What’s it say now, what’s it say now?’ And you still don’t know,” Grand said of the tire choice before the race. “It didn’t look like it was going to rain there for a while. We were guessing right up to literally the last minute, and I had to rush to get on the grid because we were trying to decide what tire to use. We guessed right and went with the Hoosier rains, and that worked out. At first the track was half wet, half dry, so Andrew and I had a great battle back and forth. Then it started drying up and I went back a little bit.

“I said to my crew, I could really use some rain right now. About that time, it started raining. So I was just trying to be patient and let the track come back to me. It feels great to get the second win in a row.”

Gilsinger, the 2010 Touring 3 National Champion, started 15th in his No. 07 BFG/HPD/H&R/Recaro/BRM Acura TX-SH AWD and survived the conditions to finish second.

“When we started the race, we went out on slicks,” Gilsinger said. “I ran the T3 race yesterday, and we had similar conditions at the beginning. We went out on rains for that race and it was the wrong call. We decided to go out on slicks, and knowing we had the all wheel drive gave a little bit more comfort.

“At the beginning, it was wet enough to where I was able to take advantage. Then it started to dry out a little bit, and our power to weight is not quite there. So we started to move a little backwards when it was drying out. I saw the rain drops on the windshield and started to get a little bit excited again, but then it downpoured and there were puddles everywhere, and that’s when it got bad for everyone. You have to work really hard to keep it on the track in those conditions.

“Turn 3 and between the Kink and Canada Corner, there was just standing water in a lot of places. Under acceleration, braking, it didn’t matter, you had no control. Especially people on slicks. There was zero grip. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to see the checkered flag.”

Kossoff was running 10th in his No. 2 Kossof Motorsports BMW M3 when the rain came, and gained several positions each lap as cars slid off or pitted. He crossed the finish line in third place, but was penalized three positions after the race for passing under a yellow flag.
Brian Kleeman, of Baltimore, Md., started last in his No. 88 ICS Learning Group/DWW Motorsports Nissan 350Z and was elevated to third after Kossoff’s penalty to earn the Sunoco Hard Charger award.

Bill Baten, of Indianapolis, Ind., was scored in fourth on the final result in his No. 98 Hoosier/Marks ADR/VanWinkle Chevrolet Camaro. Todd Napieralski, of Chelsea, Mich., was scored in fifth in his No. 33 Total Performance Racing Chevrolet Camaro.

Aquilante earned the Hawk Fastest Race Lap with a best time of 2:38.015 (91.131 mph)

As many of you know we have been working the VR38 motor program with the recent issues of the Nissan block cracking under extreme HP / Cylinder pressures . Our engineers and technicians have been hard at work and developed a new way to reinforce the block. We wanted to test this new theory and really put the car through its paces. The only way we know how to do that is to abuse it on the dyno and the track!

Last night we strapped the revised ALPHA 12 package to the dyno. The test vehicle was our own 2009 Nissan GT-R. Chris began tuning and the numbers just kept getting higher and higher. The final result was a Whopping 1318WHP at only 35 psi of boost!
The dyno only tells so much though. We wanted to really put the package to the test so we loaded her up in the trailer and took her to the track where Ivan was instructed to put the HP to the test. Over the next 4 hours Ivan put down no less than 10 LOW 9 second passes all above the 160 mph mark. On every pass he reported traction was horrible. Still Ivan hot lapped her one pass after the other… over and over… 9.0, 9.0,9.1,9.0.. You get the idea.

The ALPHA 12 was making so much power it would not get 100% traction until 5th gear!!! To make matters worse the weather was horrible… High humidity and a heat index north of 90 degrees created a hot and greasy track. Even with these condition the ALPHA 12 was able to reset the worlds fastest and quickest GT-R with a best time of 9.05@166.66MPH!

If that wasn’t enough we checked the V-box time on that record pass and we improved our 60-130 time to 3.46 Seconds!!!!!!

All in all it was a great day. The ALPHA 12 was put through a 12 round prize fight and came out still swinging!

Below is the dyno chart from last nights session. Peak boost was 35 psi as it was run today. The car can run more boost but with traction being an issue we never had a chance to raise it.

I have also attached the time slip from the best pass at the track.

We are hoping to get her back to the track very soon once we can get some more favorable weather conditions. I will keep everyone posted!

It was not on the market long and a lucky Chicago Resident snatched it up and QUICK! Upon delivery of the car the new owner had a ton of Audio and interior work done to the car. In addition he contacted us for a an ALPHA 10 conversion and a 93 octane tune.

The results were GREAT and I’ll get to that in a minute for now lets walk you though some of he build pictures

The car was kept in pristine condition by the new owner and a really impressive Audio system and interior treatment was added to the car:

And now on to the dyno numbers. We knew the ALPHA 10 on the 3.8 was a great match. What really surprised us on this build was the amount of power and how fast this kit spools!!!!! on the street this car is making peak torque at right about 4000RPM! This is a mid 9 second capable street car in full street trim. I see a lot of cars come through here that I sit back and say “wow that would be one hell of a car to own” This setup officially tops that list!

I had big plans for this weekend. I know Autobahn pretty well and I planned to test 2 different configs in 2 days – weather dependent…

We drove up Friday night after work. And by ‘WE’ I mean myself, my wife (married 6 months ago) and our 3 yr old puppy. It’s about 3hrs to Autobahn up by Chicago, IL. The plan was to camp out Fri & Sat at the track. We leave the driveway at 5:07pm. About 5:45pm my wife hears they spotted a Tornado in our hometown at 5:15pm – so we juuuussssttttt missed it. Everything to the W of us looked dark and nasty so we kept heading N to the track with NO plans to stop!

Saturday
After spending the night in the tent in 30+ mph winds and temps in the low 40′s we awoke to…. more of the same. We were cold but we stayed dry all night. The forecast was for rain most of the day; maybe clearing up late afternoon…maybe . Having my Dunlops StarSpecs mounted I head out for several drift-athons and have fun. I’m at the front of the entire TT pack; but with street tires and AWD and some nerve; it’s not all the difficult. The rain broke around noon; just in time for the lunchbreak so we ate in just wind (no rain). At this point I had a best lap of 2:03x – still the top of TT but nothing fantastic. I think I ran a 1:57 last year at the Redline event in a downpour so I wasn’t killing myself out there.

We had 2 sessions left in the late afternoon yet. Checking the radar there was a small break so I decided to mount up the newest Hoosiers (I carried 2 sets in). I figure I’m already in the lead with the rain setup; might as well prep for possible dry conditions right! While I’m loosening lugnuts the rain comes; then the sleet; then the snow. No joke; right about 2:30pm. Keep in mind NASA does not shut down for this and there’s a race going on during this crap!

Once again checking the radar and forecast we see nothing better for the next few hours. We also see Sat night dipping into the high 30′s so I say screw camping and we book a hotel! The time for our 4th session comes and being it’s still raining and I now have slicks mounted I skip it. No change for the 5th session so I painfully skip it and we head for the hotel and a warm shower.

My time held up for 1st in class as well as FTD overall in TT. Here’s some non drifting-aton vid – and you’ll be happy to note I have a new camera finally

Sunday
Sunday morning the TT group was the first ones on track at 8:30! I decided to go out and defend my gridspot – as we grid by time and all the Sat times were in the 2:03-2:35 range. So I asked a buddy to go with me for the hell of it because I like to scare people! As it was in the 40′s it took a bit for the tires to warm up, so the rear was pretty loose for several laps which is quite fun! Eventually we played a few laps of cat-n-mouse with a TTB 350Z and had some fun running mostly 1:38′s to keep at the front of the grid.

S2 I went out and hammered it. The car felt good but I was getting held up by a TTR C6 Z06 (check out the vid below). Unfortunately he ruined 2 of my laps and after that the tires were out of their prime. I did manage a 1:33.5 to regain the #1 gridspot so I’d be in front of that C6 Z06 the next session! I was also just .2 off my TTA track record from 2010 and knew it was well within site.

S3 was probably going to be my last as there was a 2.5hr gap afterwards and it’d been a long cold weekend for the wife and dog. I led the group out, took 1 lap to warmup everything and ran a pair of 1:32′s with the last being 1:32.1 and breaking my own TTA track record from 2010. That time also held for FTD overall in TT; and 2nd fastest car including the racegroups!

Apart from a few sloppy lines; that was pretty much everything this current config had in it. That in itself was some great knowledge to have. I only wish we could have done all that on Saturday instead of Sunday. As I had a different config I wanted to test; but it’ll have to wait.

All in all I ran 1.1 seconds faster that last year and reset my track record. I also had FTD both Saturday and Sunday over the entire TT group. I didn’t get to test the multiple configs; so that was a bummer to say the least. But with zero changes to the suspension, the car is already rotating better on the setup than it ever did last year. I have to thank Aaron from Winning Formula for the setup, AMS Performance for the power delivery and Sheppard Racing for the trick rear diff. Enjoy the dry vid…

AMS Nissan R35 GT-R Alpha Induction Kit

Accurate Airflow Metering Provides Big Power And Perfect Driveability

By changing to a blow-through style MAF we have eliminated the problems associated with running big power on a factory pull-through system. Smoother driveability and a higher peak HP threshold (when used with our ALPHA MAF sensors) can be achieved while still using a 3” pipe… we have proven well over 1400HP to date. This blow-through conversion allows for much better measurement of the airflow that is actually entering the engine and allows you to run a BOV that will vent to atmosphere without the consequences of a standard MAF.

Maximum Airflow For Maximum Horsepower And Torque

By increasing the size of the upper intercooler pipe on the GT-R from 60mm to 76mm (3″) we allow for more airflow resulting in the greatest increase in HP and torque. Each pipe is powder coated in wrinkle black for good looks and durability.

Cooler Intake Charge Boosts Power And Response

Cooler air makes more power, there is nothing new about that. We designed our Alpha Intake Piping to pull the coolest air into your engine for the best power gains possible.

AMS Innovation Makes Changing Blow Off Valves Easy!

We took a new approach on accommodating different BOV’s making it easier than ever to swap them out. Instead of the traditional welding on of the appropriate flange we incorporated a threaded boss that you can screw on a flange for either a stock, HKS or TiAL valve. Now there is no need to cut off and weld on flanges!

Benefits

* Blow-through conversion eliminates driveability problems
* More accurate metering of air-flow for smoother part-throttle operation
* Proven efficient to over 1400HP
* 76mm (3″) piping for increased power output
* Cold air intake system for cooler air charge
* Simple solution for changing BOV’s
* Extensively tested and proven solution
