TOPSPEED MOTORSPORTS GT-R WINS 2011 ONE LAP OF AMERICA WITH THE AMS ALPHA 9 PACKAGE

Imagine a team of two traveling over 3500 miles to race 9 events in eight days at some of the most demanding road courses of the eastern and Midwest United States. Throw in a drag race event midway through the competition along with a wet and dry skid pad event to kick off and end it all and you’d think you’d already have a rough challenge ahead of you. Now imagine you have no transport vehicle, the whole journey would have to be traversed in your race vehicle and you have to do it all on ONE set of tires! That’s what Leh Keen and Doug Wilks had to do in their TopSpeed Motorsports GT-R along with roughly 80 other competition vehicles for a chance to win the 2011 Brock Yates’ One Lap of America.

Competition for the 2011 One Lap of America began at the Tire Rack facility in South Bend, IN on April 30, 2011. The event made its way full circle over 3500 miles throughout much of the eastern and Midwest United States and ended a little over one week later on May 5, 2011. With nine race events and two skid pad competitions, this event was a true a test of endurance for both man and machine.

A majority of our business here at AMS is building completely prepared race cars for our customers. We campaign our own very successful race team and based on those efforts/merrits we are able to provide very capable and proven race cars to our customers.

A while back we had a couple of customers work with us to build two very nice EVO track cars:
“Blue Demon” Time Attack EVO IX
“Silver Bullet” Road Race EVO X

Well these two are at it again and this time they want to build a GT-R. Just like the two EVO’s prior they went and bought a BRAND NEW GT-R from the dealer and sent it over to us to work our magic. This car came to us with a whopping 74 miles on it.

This past weekend we had the pleasure of attending the TX2K10 Supra & GTR Nationals event in Houston Texas. During the event we took part in the GT-R Dyno competition where our AMS SR 850 package equipped GT-R placed 1st with 764 All Wheel Horsepower. Following the Friday’s Dyno results we could not wait to send the car down the quarter mile the next day. Unfortunately due to bad weather Saturday’s Drag Racing event was moved to Sunday forcing us to wait another day to see what the Godzilla could do. Sunday we arrived at the track earlier to prepare the car and we were among the first five cars to run. To our amazement right off the trailer; on a cold the track with full interior the GT-R flew down the quarter mile in 9.90 seconds at the speed of 146.9 MPH ! The pass broke the world record for the Quickest and Fastest Nissan GT-R and entered our Godzilla into the history books as the world’s first GT-R to break the 9 second barrier. Later in the day we were able to best our previous pass of 9.90 with a 9.89 @ 145.98 MPH.

How do you improve on perfection? This question has been asked time and time again regarding the new Nissan GT-R.  AMS found a way! One of our many offerings for the new Nissan GT-R will be a front mount intercooler (FMIC) upgrade. Although the factory unit performs well for its construction the new AMS unit will incorporate larger volume cast end tanks. A larger volume Bar and plate core and have an OEM like fit and finish! Many of you have been following our threads on some of the new products we are working on. The two that have gained the most attention are the AMS bolt on turbo upgrades and also our new Cast downpipes. Well we finally got some time to do some testing and tuning thanks to Sharif and the guys over at Forged Performance.

Below is a dyno of our project GT-R. The modifications could not be any simpler.

You will see two plots

Both on 93 octane

The red plot has the following modifications:

AMS Turbo’s
850cc injectors
AMS Mid pipe and exhaust
STOCK DOWNPIPES WITH CATS
Cobb Access port with an AMS/Forged Performance tune
HKS EVC
Forge Actuators

587 whp and 555 ft lbs of torque

The blue plot is the same car but now with our new Cast Downpipes…WOW!!!!!

The turbo’s are spooling 500 rpm quicker and the mid range is just INSANE!!! Previously at 3500 rpm we were seeing about 10 psi of boost. With the downpipes we are now seeing 20! up top you can see a 25 – 25 whp gain just about EVERYWHERE!

AFR’s also went a decent amount leaner which is a sign they are workign as they are moving more air.

We need to tweak the map a bit and clean up the AFR’s and throw some more timing at it but right now these turbos, exhaust are working exactly like we had hoped!!!
