Autobahn 2010 Race Report
Finally, the Gates311. com / Nitto Tires Evo X made itís 2010 track debut! With a completely new setup, weíve all be curious to see how itíd stack up to all the new competition in Modified class for 2010. Despite some issues, the car still performed awesome….we debuted with a 2nd place finish at Autobahn, not 1st place but thereís plenty of positive things that came out of the event. Cobb Tuning took 1st in their nasty widebody GT-R, about 7/10ths of a second ahead, congrats to them! We both beat my previous lap record with 1:28ís.
At the end of last week David Kern and his AMS Hill Climb EVO made the journey all the way from Colorado for some last minutes upgrades in preparations for the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Among various small pieces the list of upgrades also included a new build AMS 2.3 stoker engine with 11 : 1 compression to give Dave the extra bit of power to help him storm the mountain.
The AMS GT-R SR series Turbo kit is really starting to take shape now. With custom silicone now here and attached the kit is almost ready for testing.
In the pictures below you will see much of what won’t be visable in the car. This setup is what will go on Tim sanders GT-R. Chucks will be a little larger.
Also the Compressor outlet pipe for Chuck and Tim’s car will be hand welded as is seen in the pics but the production kits will have a casted aluminum piece in its place with a smoother transition and more OEM like fit and finish.
With all of this done the next step is to finish the oil and water lines and drop the engine back in the car. From there we can finish the downpipes and finally get Tim’s car on the dyno!
I can’t wait to hear what these turbo’s are going to sound like with that intake pipe on there
2 Tracks in 2 Days! Part 2 of 2
Fresh off a successful trackday with NASA @ BlackHawk Farms where I took 1st in class and set a class record we were headed to Autobahn for the Redline event.
It was a short nap but I was just happy to be there. Sat had been so hot and frustrating. Heck, the whole week was a chore to get ready. As my car is prepped for NASA TTB, there’s a whole different set of rules for Redline Street class. I had to install new seats, a new exhaust for clearance, reinstall my center console and some other misc odd things to be legal in their ‘Street’ class.
2 Tracks in 2 Days! Part 1 of 2
Insane weekend! The plan was to run Sat 6/12 with NASA @ BlackHawk Farms then drive the 2.5 hrs to run with Redline Time Attack @ Autobahn on Sun 6/13. Short story; it was accomplished but not without some cumbersome issues!
We arrived @ Blackhawk about 11pm Friday night. Sat morning I ran the car on street tires to get a practice session in, got a rain session in then went to mount up new Hoosiers. At about 11am I discovered a stripped front wheel stud. I seeked out all the other Evo’s at the track along with calling parts stores in both IL and Wisconsin for parts – notta. I was able to locate 2 stock length studs in Wisconsin and thought I could make one work, so I sent my finance’ on a parts run. While she was out, I sourced an old stock stud off a 2G Eclipse (thx racer145!). I dismantled everything (sweating profusely) and although the old stud didn’t fit tightly at all, I figured I could make it work with some luck and pressure. I bolted everything back up about the time my parts hottie got back. At this point the our dog was throwing up since it was too hot; so my attention wasn’t at 100%.
